Curriculum for 3 to 6 Class

The school offers an individualized curriculum that is "child-centered". This allows each child to learn and develop at his/her own pace, all the while obtaining a sense of order, developing coordination, reaching higher levels of concentration thereby, becoming more independent mentally and physically. All of these developing characteristics result in the child gaining much more self confidence in his/her own well being.

The above characteristics are given opportunities for development through the following areas of lessons found in the Montessori environment:

PRACTICAL LIFE

Practical life exercises are the basic foundation to the development and growth of a young child. These exercises are some of the first introduced to the child when entering a Montessori environment. The exercises also satisfy a child's physical social and psychological needs occurring during this developmental stage.

SENSORAL

Sensorial exercises isolate and focus in on one sense at a time. Through this refinement of the five senses, the child develops better organized patterns of behavior as they mature to higher level lessons.

lang.JPG (27550 bytes)    LANGUAGE

Through sensorial presentations, the pre-writing and pre-reading skills of each child are encouraged to develop further. Numerous opportunities for verbal non-verbal, outward and inward expressions of communication are given throughout the course of each day. With every child progressing towards writing and reading, the readers and workbooks from PRIMARY PHONICS and MODERN CURRICULUM PRESS are used to expand their capabilities.
MATHEMATICS

These materials are used in such a way that the child obtains knowledge in a sensorial fashion as when using other types of materials found in the environment. The materials are used to enable the child to take an abstract mathematical equation and work with it in a concrete form. The lessons cover the following:

b1.GIF (834 bytes) Functions of addition
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Multiplication
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Subtraction
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Division

COMPUTERS

Through daily use, the child develops their knowledge of the hardware and the many applications of software made available to them. The hardware and software is always being upgraded and updated to allow the child to learn what is applicable to today's technology. Through this approach, computer instruction is then always perceived as fun and challenging.

As with mathematics, these lessons of Geography, historical time events, cultures, holidays, etc., take an abstract concept and allow the child to work with in it a concrete form. The calendar, our solar system and ecological responsibilities are also covered in this area.

SCIENCE

Through sensorial experiences, some of the following topics are conveyed to each child:

b1.GIF (834 bytes)    Ways of helping the Earth's environment
b1.GIF (834 bytes)    Plants & humans and their parts
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Living/nonliving things
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Seasons
b1.GIF (834 bytes) Life cycles

ART

We encourage total creativity through all art form mediums used by the child. Coloring, painting, gluing, and clay are some of the mediums available to the children. Famous artists and their works are also displayed and discussed with the children to show there are no limitations to what they can create.

MUSIC

Singing, dancing to music, rhythm band instruments, experiencing high to low notes, matching notes and styles of music are some of the ways that music is imparted to the children.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Ample time outdoors using the playground equipment and gardening promote the children to develop their Gross Motor skills.
